In the Middle Ages life was structured around the feudal system, a military-political
organisation in which the lords of the land exercised hierarchical
superiority over their vassals. The Saracen threat pushed
the people towards the mountains, and motivated the construction
of numerous defensive castles some located on well elevated
points of the Montseny like the castle of Les Agudes, Miravalls
or Tagamanent, which have today disappeared. Other important
castles on the mountain range are those of Montclús,
Cànoves, Montmany, Aiguafreda and El Brull. Above all
of these stands the Castle of Montsoriu, notable as much for
its strategic importance in the Middle Ages and today for
its state of preservation, which has made it one of the most
valued medieval buildings in the country.
