The oldest remains to be found at Montseny lie in the surrounding
plain. The first definite dates of human settlement of the
mountain range are indicated by Megalithic sepulchres, the
dolmens. Since the time of the Iberians, the defensive wall
on the hill of El Montgròs is the most important prehistoric
archaeological site of the area. The Romans with their colonisation
expansion around the Mediterranean exported their urban and
productive model to the entire empire, so too with the Montseny,
where they co-existed with the Iberian population for some
time. The Romans were none too fond of mountains however,
and chose the plains as their habitat.
