The Romans set up their villas on the plains which surround
the hill range. These were extensive rural colonies with the
house in a central position, surrounded by farmland. Traditional
Mediterranean crops were grown here: cereals, wine and oil,
which they often re-imported from Rome. The Roman settlement
was favoured by the Imperial communication routes in the area,
especially the Via Augusta, which connected Semproniana (Granollers)
and Seterras (Hostalric) and La Via d'Ausa (Vic) to Barcino.
Can Terrés, in the region of La Garriga is the main
Roman villa in the Montseny region. It dates from the 1st
century B.C. and had some 30 hectares of land. The building
is about 3,000 square metres in size, with luxury baths or
spas.
