Some popular beliefs talk of white-breasted black birds which fly above the
pools, and which during the warm nights of summer transform
into beautiful water maidens who bathe in the light
of the moon, combing their long blond hair with golden
combs. Although it is true that the rock thrush, a white
breasted dark coloured bird frequents the streams of
the mountain, no one has yet observed the transformation.
The rock thrush does however display some curious habits
related to water, it walks on the river bed and may
hide its nest behind the falling curtain of water of
a waterfall. Perhaps this is the source of the legend?
The inheritor of a rich farm on the Montseny
was watching the dark waters of a pool when suddenly
a water maiden appeared. The young man fell in love
instantly. The nymph agreed to marry him on the condition
that he never mentioned again that she had lived as
a water nymph. They had a son and a daughter, the house
prospered and they were happy. One afternoon a storm
threatened to ruin the harvest and the wife ordered
the corn to be cut even though it was not yet ripe.
The storm however did not break, and the husband, on
returning home and seeing the loss, exclaimed “Trust
a water maiden!” At that moment the wife disappeared
although the children insisted that every morning their
mother came to comb their hair, the husband never saw
her again ". This is the legend which forms the
audiovisual display "Legends of the Montseny"
which can be seen at the EthnologicalMuseum of the Montseny
of La Gabella in Arbúcies..
