The river is a part of the landscape which has often been seen as the “wildest”
element of our every day surroundings. In some
legends and beliefs the river and its imaginary
inhabitants are symbols of wealth and fertility,
in others however, they are the origin of bad
luck, and their inhabitants are characters to
be feared. Of the positive myths related to the
River Tordera, the myth of the water maiden is
one of the most well-known and widespread in the
area of the Montseny.
The water maidens or nymphs were beautiful women
who lived in palaces under the waters, or in deep
caves, full of treasure.
They usually danced at night, and washed
their clothes on the banks of rivers or lakes,
drying them out in the light of the moon. Those
who managed to steal a piece of clothing were
ensured prosperity. Their main activities consisted
in bewitching and captivating people: enchanting
people to become dumbstruck in their presence
(…) (Fàbrega: 2000,61). The myths
of water maidens can be found in different areas
of the massif: Arbúcies, Gualba, Riells,
Fogars de Montclús, Viladrau and also outside
the area.
