Poets in Montseny

EL MONTSENY I ELS POETES

GUERAU DE LIOST AND JAUME BOFILL
Guerau de Liost, under the pseudonym of Jaume Bofill i Mates (1878-1933), took Montseny as a source of inspiration for his first book, “Amethyst Mountain” as well as for “Woodland Love” and “Rural Offering”. He is, without doubt the poet of Montseny.

VÍCTOR BALAGUER AND ELS LLIBRES DE VIATGES
”At the foot of the Summit” (1893), by Víctor Balaguer (1824-1901) is possibly the most famous of the books of journeys through Montseny.

MARIÀ MANENT AND THE OBSERVATION OF NATURE
The poet Marià Manent kept her best descriptions for the mountains of the Montseny. A large part of her narrative work, with its intense descriptive precision, steeped in poetic language, is dedicated to the mountain range, an example being “The Veil of Maia”, written in the form of a newspaper.

A POEM BY GUERAU DE LIOST
"May God watch over you traveller! May Montseny grant you a little love and a little common sense. Here you have a stone bench dappled with maiden’s hair. Here you have a spring that could talk to you. The virtue of Montseny is that the stream rinses out the leaves of firs and beeches. The virtue of Montseny is formed at altitude. This is why this spring has such a pure look, and its course echoes, moaning through the wood of the forest tortured by the wind."

MN. PERE RIBOT
Monsignor Pere Ribot (1908-1997) arrived at the parish of Riells del Montseny in 1941. He found peace and repose in the area while working as a chaplain and he also found inspiration for his poetry. From that time on this area of Montseny became a meeting place for those who sought the wise words of this humble, simple and joyful man.
His remains rest in the small cemetery next to the church of Riells, buried in the ground as he wished.

THE AIR OF MONTSENY

Pere Ribot (1968)

I have found my land
And my liberty:
The mountain, the air, the field,
The air, the air of Montseny.

Each cliff, each outcrop,
Mystery of solitude:
The couple, the man , the flock,
The air, the air of Montseny.

All is pure, sweet and sturdy
And strong like eternity:
Silence, peace and combat,
The air, the air of Montseny
